It’s been a long while since I’ve brought you a new idea for a 2 x 4 wooden craft.
The holidays and winter got here, and I’m less inclined to spend a day out in the cold garage creating.
I want to sit and craft with my blankets or heater on, wishing I was in the south where it’s not so cold.
Should I be honest and admit, I started on these back in the Fall? I just couldn’t get them finished. I would work on them a little, then leave them sitting for a month or three.
Then, I wouldn’t have what I needed to finish them, and would put off, or just downright forget what I needed.
So they sat, and sat.
I finally finished them, and then it wasn’t wintery looking outside. BAH!
How lucky then that we got a dusting of snow on the 1st day of Spring! I ran out and got my final photo,s and I can finally get these up for you to enjoy!

Now I can show you how to make these cute 2 x 4 wooden penguins!
Cut two pieces of 2 x 4, one at 10 inches and one at 7 inches. You can also have these cut at the hardware store for a little money.
I cut the top corners off, you can leave them flat across if you want. They are at a 30% angle. After sanding them down, paint with white acrylic paint.
Allow them to dry and then mark heart shapes with rounded bottoms on the front of the block.
Using black acrylic paint, paint the blocks around the pencil marks.
While those dry, take thin pieces of wood, (you can find it in the carving section of your craft store), and use a cutting mat and craft knife to carve out the beak. Cut out another about the same size. They are basically just triangle shapes.
Use another piece of thin wood and cut out the feet. Trace the number three sideways and cut the wood out as best you can. Cut out two sets of feet, one smaller and one larger.
After trimming them, sand the edges smooth.
Once the pieces are smooth, paint them with acrylic paint and allow them to dry.
Use a little cheap blush or chalk with a pompom to create rosy cheeks on the sides of the face.
Touch up any spots using black paint. I also ended up painting the bottoms of the blocks as well.
Adhere the feet and beaks on the penguins. I use silicone as a glue/adhesive. You can find it in the home store with caulks. Allow the silicone to dry overnight.
Buy fuzzy socks. They are everywhere. Use a pair or two. I used one of each of two pairs. Stretch the hem of the sock out onto the top of the block. Use hot glue to keep the sock in place. (Lift the edges of the sock up, and tuck the glue underneath.)
Once the glue is dry, take a little DMC floss, and tie off the top of the sock just at the top of the penguins head. Make sure you double and triple knot. Then, add a small bow. Cut off the sock about an inch above that.
Use a pen with a flat bottom, or an unused eraser to dot the eyes in black paint.
You can add highlights with white paint later. I used an ultra fine sharpie to give the smaller penguin eye lashes.
